Artist Statement Excerpt

Brecht’s A Short Organum for the Theatre clearly states the importance of theatre as a medium to inspire social change. Theatre should be a place to inspire personal and social change through truthful and vulnerable acting, and that’s the theatre I create.

Brecht has always been an inspiration for me. He was able to spark a change in society using only his work. He highlighted and critiqued the flaws he saw in his society and people listened. It’s crucial that I use my art in the same way. We are living in a world where it is becoming increasingly harder to be different. Every day someone is killed for being who they are, laws are being put in place to limit our individuality and freedom, and our lives are being threatened. Queer people are at risk. As a queer Texan, it’s impossible to ignore the legislations being put into effect in our state that limit us. I have to use my art to highlight, critique, and fight for our voices to be heard and for changes to be made. To quote Brecht himself “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.” This quote inspires me in every creative endeavor I have to use my work as a tool to change the world.
